The Speed of Knowing

New neuroscience suggests intuition isn’t a shortcut around thinking — it might be how thinking starts. Here’s what that actually means for the decisions you make this week.

Think of the last time you knew something before you could explain why.
A friend who seemed “off” hours before she told you what was wrong. A job offer that looked perfect on paper and still made you uneasy. A decision you made in seconds that turned out to be the right one, even though you couldn’t have defended it in an argument.
We tend to file these moments under lucky guess — a lesser, unreliable cousin of real thinking. Science has generally agreed, until this year.
Two studies published in 2026, plus some older research they help make sense of, offer a genuinely useful picture of what intuition is and, more importantly, when it deserves your trust.
The brain doesn’t wait to decide
For decades the standard model of the brain was a one-way pipeline: raw sensory information comes in, gets passed up through increasingly sophisticated regions, and only at the very top — in the prefrontal cortex — does a decision happen. Feeling first, deciding later, in that order, no shortcuts.
A team led by Professor Yurii Vlasov at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, publishing in PNAS, found something that complicates this.
They recorded brain activity in mice navigating a virtual maze, making left-or-right decisions based on whisker touch. The surprise wasn’t in the “high level” decision-making areas. It was in the primary somatosensory cortex — one of the earliest, most basic relay stations in the brain, the part assumed to simply register touch and pass it along.
Decision-related signals showed up there almost immediately, arriving through fast feedback loops from higher regions.
In plain terms: your brain isn’t a courtroom where evidence is gathered first and a verdict handed down later. The judgment is already present at the moment of sensing, in constant two-way conversation with it.
What feels like knowing something before you think about it may not be a bypass around thought. It may be what thought looks like when it’s fast enough that you never notice the gap.
Reasoning and intuition may be two speeds of the same underlying process.
Why the grandmaster who thinks longer often plays worse
The second study takes a different route to a related point.
Researchers analysed professional chess games, comparing how long players spent on each move against how good that move actually was, according to chess engines — while holding the objective difficulty of the position constant.
The finding cuts against a belief most of us hold without examining it: that more deliberation produces better decisions.
At matched difficulty, faster moves were, on average, higher quality than slower ones.
The researchers’ explanation reframes what long thinking usually means. It isn’t diligence paying off. It’s often a sign that a player’s fast, pattern-based recognition already failed to find the answer — and the resulting slow, step-by-step calculation is a worse substitute, not an upgrade.
This isn’t a case for impulsiveness. It’s evidence that trained, experience-built recognition has a resolving power that conscious, sequential reasoning can’t fully replace once you already have the expertise.
The older science this builds on
None of this appears out of nowhere.
Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio’s somatic marker hypothesis, from the 1990s, proposed that the body stores the lessons of past experience — a tightening chest, a knot in the stomach — and signals them before the conscious mind can articulate a reason.
Psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer has spent decades showing that simple intuitive rules of thumb frequently outperform complex calculations, particularly in uncertain, fast-moving situations those calculations weren’t built for.
And Ap Dijksterhuis proposed that complex decisions with many competing factors sometimes benefit from being set aside, letting unconscious processing work on them.
That last idea is worth a caveat, in the interest of not overselling this. Later attempts to replicate the strong version of unconscious thought theory produced much messier, more mixed results than the original research promised.
It doesn’t erase the underlying insight — that non-conscious processing does real cognitive work. But it’s a reminder that intuition isn’t infallible or magical. It’s a mechanism, still being mapped, with real limits.
When to trust it
Here’s the caveat that makes all of this practical instead of merely interesting.
Intuition is only as reliable as the environment that trained it.
The chess grandmaster can trust a three-second move because the game has given them tens of thousands of positions with immediate, unambiguous feedback — you play badly, you lose, right away. A veteran ER doctor can trust a flicker of concern about a patient because they’ve seen hundreds of cases and learned, through consequence, what that flicker tends to mean.
That same I just feel it is far less trustworthy about a stock pick, a new acquaintance’s character, or any decision where feedback is slow, rare, or easy to misread.

Field notes: how to actually use this
Ask whether you’re in your zone.
Before trusting a fast read, ask honestly: have I done this, or something close to it, many times before, with clear feedback on how it turned out? If yes, your first instinct deserves real weight. If this is genuinely new territory, treat your gut as a hypothesis to check, not a verdict.
Treat hesitation as data, not a problem to push through.
If you’re experienced in something and find yourself deliberating for a long time, that hesitation is often a signal that your fast pattern-recognition already came up empty. Ask what, specifically, feels unfamiliar about this case — don’t just think harder along the same lines.
Separate intuition from anxiety — they can feel identical.
A quiet, specific sense of something’s wrong here, built from real experience, is different from a diffuse, story-generating fear about an outcome. One tends to be calm and oddly precise; the other tends to spiral. When you can’t tell which, slow down.
Don’t ask big, low-feedback decisions to be settled by feeling alone.
A career path, a life partner, a major purchase — these involve exactly the infrequent, delayed feedback that intuition is worst at. Combine how you feel with real information-gathering, and give yourself literal time away from the problem before deciding.

None of this replaces reasoning with feeling, or the other way around.
What the 2026 research actually suggests is less tidy and more useful: the real skill isn’t picking a side. It’s knowing which parts of your life have given you enough honest feedback to have earned a fast instinct — and which haven’t yet.
